Knives Out Review
Knives Out was one of the best films I have seen in a long time. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of the movie. It is a classic whodunit, and as expected it provides several plot twists. This movie is not your average murder mystery though. It is incredibly unique in the sense that it provides the entire plot about halfway through the movie. You know exactly who did what and why. The remaining half of the movie then provides a twist on how you may have perceived what happened. Giving points of view from different characters causes the audience to redefine everything you knew beforehand. This film is complimented by subtle humor and a refreshing setting that takes place in the present day.
Having been released the same weekend as Frozen 2, Knives Out did astoundingly well at the box office. Collecting $41.7 million, it was nearly double what was expected. Not only did Knives Out collect some good cash, but it also received excellent reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 97% on its harsh Tomatometer scale, and IMDb gave it an 8.10/10. Metacritic thought similarly with an 82% on its scale.
I thought this movie was brilliant. I was on the edge of my seat for the last hour of it, waiting to find out what would happen next. Knives Out is made for many viewers, it is clean (being PG-13) while at the same time sneaking in sly jokes that the adult audience may only pick up on. Rian Johnson produced such a well thought out and precise plot, you could tell he knew exactly what he wanted to do from start to finish. Another thing that added to this film was the music. Produced by Rian’s cousin, Nathan Johnson, it was old fashion and catchy from the start.
One of my favorite parts of the movie was throughout it all, star character, Marta Cabrera, showed compassion. She was placed in many difficult situations; and whenever in doubt she made the right decision. Even though this movie was focused around murder and wrongdoings, it was still able to deliver a message about kindness and compassion.
Overall, Knives Out is one of my personal favorites. I enjoyed the dramatic plot twists, great acting, and well thought out storyline. I strongly recommend you go watch it.
