Moore to Watch on Netflix
In today's day and age, you probably aren't going to your neighborhood Blockbuster to pick up a movie for the night. You may be like nearly 203 million people worldwide that subscribe monthly to the popular streaming service, Netflix. With 3,781 movies on Netflix to date, and that number will surely continue to rise, it can be hard to decipher between the good and the bad. Today, I am going to give you my top 5 dystopian films on Netflix and why I chose them.
The Platform
This movie is set in a dystopian world where federal prisons are structured and categorized by 333 vertical platforms with a gaping rectangular hole in the middle of each one. The twist is each day an enormous buffet of food is brought down on a floating rectangular prism that passes through each platform for only a minute. With this system in place, if you are on level 23, you might get enough food to survive. However, if you are on platform 200, you will be starving for that month.
The movie follows a man named Ivan Messague, who has voluntarily placed himself inside the prison to help him quit smoking, where we observe his everyday decisions inside his cell.
Overall, this movie had me engaged throughout the entirety of the film, wondering what is going to happen next. If you are a fan of thrillers, this is the movie for you.
Freaks
Directed by Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky in 2018, in this dystopian world, we follow a little girl who is forced to stay inside by her father to avoid the government because of her superpower capabilities. Throughout the film, we watch as her dad slowly but surely losses his mind when attempting to control her. When Chloe is finally exposed to the outside world, we watch as she and her father evade the government leaving the audience with a crazy ending.
Compared to the other films on this list, this was probably my least favorite, but still a great film. Overall, this is a highly underrated movie with so many twists and turns that it will have you glued to your seat the entire time. With Much like Platform, if you are a fan of thrillers, definitely check this movie out.
Circle
With keeping the theme of dystopian films, we have the movie Circle. Nonstop action begins as soon as you hit play, when we find 50 strangers in a dark room in a circle. Each member is placed on their own spot and if they step off, the electric zapper in the middle will shock them and kill them. Every 2 minutes, members of the circle each cast their vote as to who will die next.
Eventually, as the movie progresses, the members of the circle start to rationalize their decision to kill someone. For example, if someone is above the age of 70, then the group decides they should be killed off. While watching this movie, I found myself constantly screaming at the TV in frustration and will surely have you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
What Happened to Monday
Directed by Tommy Wirkola and starring Noomi Rapace, in a world where you can only have one child due to overpopulation, this movie follows a particular couple that had 7 identical girls. The issue is, they have to keep this a secret from the government, or they will be executed. The 7 girls are all named after a certain day of the week. The only day they are allowed to go outside is the day they are named after, so nobody thinks there is more than one of them. When Monday goes missing from the group, the family goes out and tries to find her while avoiding execution.
Overall, this movie is one of the best movies I have seen on Netflix. Recommend checking this one out.
Snowpiercer
Starring Chris Evans, Snowpiercer - directed by Bong Joon-Ho, takes place in a futuristic society where a climate change has turned the world into a ball of ice, where all of the population is forced to be segregated on a moving train circling the world. Throughout the movie, we peek our heads into a world divided by social hierarchy.
From the acting to the directing to the crazy ending, Snowpiercer is one of the best Sci-Fi movies recently released. If you are a fan of action thrillers, go check this out!
