The Adam Project: The New #1 Movie on Netflix
This was a family movie that introduces the genre of time travel to a younger audience while bringing back the adults that have enjoyed the classic sci-fi movies of Back to the Future and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
The Adam Project, which was released on Netflix on March 11, 2022, has taken over Netflix with its star power on and off the screen. With its $116 million budget it is starring Ryan Reynolds, who is most known for his roles in Deadpool and Free Guy, brings his serious but also humorous character into the older version of Adam Reed. He is supported by Mark Ruffalo from the Avengers, who plays Louis Reed, the father of Adam, and Jennifer Garner from Catch Me if you Can, who plays Ellie Reed, the mother of Adam. Behind the screen, the Director is Shawn Levy, who has directed Stranger Things and Night at the Museum. The producers are David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, who have both played a role in producing the Mission Impossible movies.
The movie uses the popular use of time-travel and brings in the sincere and genuine story of family which keeps your attention the entire duration. It features Reynolds as a time traveler from 2050, who travels to 2018 when he needs to save the future before it changes forever. This is the same as any other time-travel movie that has been made in the past.
The actors themselves, are really filling into the roles that were made for them. Ryan Reynolds, still has his normal role of bringing a mix of seriousness, but also funny moments that lighten the mood of the entire movie. Even his younger self, who is played by Walker Scobell, kills the role by having the same persona of his older self, and that made the movie a lot better by making it real. The audience will overall enjoy how there are deep moments, but also funny moments, so that the many rollercoaster ups and downs make it enjoyable. With Ryan Reynolds’ character, it wasn’t anything different than his other popular movies, it seems like he is just having the same character traits, but just in a different scenario. He can really be compared to his other characters of Deadpool and Green Lantern.
With all science fiction and time-travel, there will be things that we don’t know, or even how they work. Overall, though, they did a good job explaining what the scenario was and why they need to solve it. The technicalities were something that you had to remind yourself along the way, since the world is different and the audience isn’t used to it. Whether it was the time-travel spaceship, the army of robots, or the futuristic weapons, it makes the film that much more interesting and keeps your attention throughout. This, combined with the soundtrack which includes hits like “Gimme Some Lovin” by The Spencer Davis Group, “Good Times, Bad Times” by Led Zeppelin, and “Foreplay/Longtime” by Boston, gives the film even more of our attention during the important, emotional, and full action scenes throughout the movie.
Besides telling us through another movie that time travel can cause harm to the past, present, and future, The Adam Project gives a statement about how you should enjoy your family while they are here, and to not just go through the motions of life everyday. There is definitely some points throughout the movie that give us something to reflect on in our own lives. Overall, I think that The Adam Project does a good job of giving us the entertainment that we came for, but also giving us a deep meaning, which keeps us engaged the entire time.
