Senior Appalachia

Each year, Moeller High School offers students the opportunity to take part in a trip to Appalachia, this Is a part of the ministry program at Moeller that offers many different service opportunities.  But this year’s senior Appalachia trip was one that was very special, as it was nearing Halloween and got to do many different seasonal things that I will get into. There were 11 students and two tours, Mr. Getting’s and Mr. Campbell.

The first day was very eventful, it started off with all the students going to a early morning Halloween bingo and playing with the seniors. Now of course its bingo but even bingo can’t get competitive as the seniors were really getting into it with the Halloween themes. After Bingo the students and counselors for the trip split into two groups. Each group went to visit different families and eat with them and just talk and be around them to fully Immerse themselves in the Appalachia experience. They also got to go visit the Methodist church and have dinner there before heading back. At the end of each day the students do a prayer and recap on each of their days.

Day two was another great day starting off strong going out with the kids in Appalachia and going trick or treating, a true throwback for the seniors. They got to go house from home and help the kids get candy while also making it an enjoyable experience. Sadly, the senior did not wear any costumes, but the kids sure did, one had a fun very creative Pacman costume on. After trick or treating the senior got to meet at the only catholic church saint peters in the area and was greeted by jerry, one of the few people who work there. After they got to visit the church and take a look around the beautiful architecture. The groups then spilt up once again, one went to go eat with another family and talk and help around the house while also getting to understand the culture. The other group got to go explore the area of Appalachia and the environment. Of course, both groups met back up and did their group prayer and recapped on the day.

Appalachian family with Moeller seniors

Day three the seniors started there day off with mass at saint peters, after mass the senior and counselors had a nice big breakfast. Of course, the seniors and counselors felt inclined and had everyone they met along the trip over to their house to all have a big meal.

Finally, to end it all off the senior to a nice hike to the top of the mountain to soak in the beautiful environment and to truly see that there is more to the world than we think. They started off with a prayer and then finally to end it all they reflected on all their days in Appalachia, the people they met, the things they did and everything they saw. Overall, the Appalachia trip is more than a trip, it is an experience to show that the world is more than money more than the materialistic items, its about the connections and people you meet on the way.
