Are Cincinnati Residents Starting to Tune Out Gunshots?
Are Cincinnati residents starting to tune out gunshots? Over the past few
months there have many several shootings in and around the Clifton area.
What started off as shock to see something like a fatal shooting take place in
our city, has slowly shifted into what people are believing is now the new
normal.
Clifton is supposed to be a place where people are able to come together,
experience the college atmosphere and enjoy good food and fun. With the
University of Cincinnati Campus being in Clifton, it is a place where
thousands of young adults spend their days working, studying, and living.
But because of the recently seen violence students and local residents are
starting to become afraid of a night in Clifton.
"I'm scared to even drive through Clifton," Moeller senior David Boehm
explained, "let alone apply and go to school there." With these incidents
taking place, students are rethinking whether or not the University of
Cincinnati is the right place for them. Star lacrosse player Will Ulman
believes, “applicants will definitely decrease.”
While some people seem very shaken by the incidents, others are calmer
and don't think there's a reason to panic. Mr. Williams thinks that with more
population comes more crimes, and that the ratio really isn't really all that
high.
Many believe that younger people are the ones causing these problems.
Supporters of this idea believe that a stricter curfew and keeping young
people off the street would result in a decrease in violent incidents.
Police have been seen taking action. Areas that would usually be heavily
populated have had police officers standing by supervising the areas. Streets
and sidewalks have been fenced off during the nights and times where dense
traffic would take place.
Will this just cause violence to take place elsewhere? Moeller senior Parker
Hausfeld thinks so, saying that "It's a scary world out there," and believes
that "kindness is the answer." With violence continuing to take place many
wonder how much longer this violence will have to continue before a change
takes place or is this going to be the new normal.
