Inside the Moeller Student Run Business

As some students know here at Moeller, we have a Student Run Business that produces T-shirts and other apparel for Moeller clubs, teams and businesses outside of Moeller such as Skyline, The Monkey Bar and Grill and Blossim doughnuts. What many students don’t know is what goes on behind the scenes. In the Student Run business there are 6 student leaders: Brady Heybruch COO (Chief Operating Officer), Brady Newlin CFO (Chief Financial Officer), Christian Rivard CMO (Chief Marketing Officer), Jacob Gath CDO (Chief Design Officer), Joseph Gertz and Keegan Hantak. Along with their roles, they also have the responsibility to help teach other students the basics in design, business finances, operations and how to commute with clients, with the end goal of every student running a project from start to finish.

When students are interested in joining the SRB, they go through an interview process with a member of faculty who will make a recommendation to Mr. Schmitt, who makes the final decision. Once selected, and classes have started, students spend a few weeks learning about the equipment inside the SRB and how it works. When asked what students are taught in the first few weeks of class, Jacob Gath said “The first few weeks of class are the most important, they get everyone on the same page”. With the skill that they are taught during the first few weeks of class, they can finally start rolling.

Once fully up to speed on how everything works, students start working to find clients and projects. “Projects are not just handed to you by Mr. Schmitt, you have to do the work. He is there just to make sure the room doesn’t catch on fire,” said Keegan Hantak. That is just one of the reasons students like the SRB so much, as they feel they’re getting a taste of how a business works and whether business is a possible career path for them.

Throughout the year, students have opportunities to run and manage a project from start to finish. This is usually one of students’ favorite parts of the class. But it’s also one of the hardest. Students have to go find a client and convince them that the SRB is right for their merchandise needs. Then they must create a design for the shirt or make sure they send over their design (have the client send theirs). Following that, they’ll place an order from our supplier. While they ship, we will start to print the designs. Lastly, we press on the logo and deliver them to the client.
