Why Moeller Should Have House Flag Football

By Drew Currin

During my time at Moeller High School, there have been many fun opportunities and activities to get house points toward the Marianist Cup. These activities not only give houses a chance to earn points, but also provide fun activities that make a student’s time at Moeller more exciting and special. Athletics at Moeller are a key part of the experience for many students, and house events such as house basketball and soccer give students a chance to come together and play sports that they would not be able to play competitively.

I have talked to many students here at Moeller, and most have agreed that house flag football would be a fun activity to add. It would help more students get involved, give students a chance to play one of their favorite sports, and make the competition between houses more fun and exciting than it already is. Even though most people I have talked to have said House Flag Football would be a great idea, some students and teachers have expressed certain downsides to this house event idea.

One objection to the idea of house flag football is that games could get too physical amongst a bunch of teenage boys. While this is a possibility, I believe that if the safety of students is explained with high urgency, then students will follow the guidelines and commit to a less rough form of play. Even with this issue in mind, I believe the perks of house flag football outweigh the potential problems.

After talking with lots of students, many of them expressed their love of football and felt that house flag football would give them a chance to play their favorite sport. The addition of flag football would give more students the chance to play, since many students end up not making their house soccer team. Additionally, adding another fall house sporting event would create more choice for students who may not enjoy soccer.

All these benefits will help build competition between houses, give students a chance to play another sport, and provide another opportunity for daily physical activity. In conclusion, adding house flag football would give houses yet another way to earn points while also making the school year more fun and exciting for many Moeller students.
