Late Starts v. Early Dismissals
When you look at the Moeller calendar, you see two common altered schedules: Late Arrival and Early Dismissal. Both have their own perks, but also have their cons. These two days have vastly different aspects to them, including class order and class time. I have heard many different opinions on which students prefer, and it’s almost 50/50.
Not much compares to the extra sleep you get on a late start day. Pushing your alarms back an hour and a half is such a good feeling. The night before knowing that you get to sleep in is great. Then you drive into school and most of the traffic has cleared up. For the rest of the day, you have a lot more energy due to your extra sleep. It sounds great, right? However, these days have negatives that must be addressed. Once you are into the day, classes are back-to-back-to-back. You will have three straight classes with no break in between. Also, the schedule changes to where your normal B3 will be your B2. This plays tricks on your head and makes it feel like the day is over. You still must go to a whole other class after it. With this change in schedule, late start days can sometimes feel longer than a regular day.
Early dismissals are very underrated in my eyes. Let me tell you why. These days come on A days. This shortens all four of the classes down to just one hour. This is great for two reasons. Obviously, it just makes the class feel much shorter. Also, most teachers tend to not do much in a shortened period. Once the clock hits twelve, you are free to go. The best part is that an off day accompanies it the day after. So, you get a head start on a three-day weekend, and there is not much better than that. After school, you can either get food with your friends or just go home and take a nap. Whatever you want to do to kick off your weekend. In my opinion, this early start to a weekend is unmatched and makes the weekend feel much longer.
Early Dismissal days are not as common as late start days. In my opinion, that should be changed. I am a much bigger fan of early dismissals rather than late starts. The one and only perk of a late start is the extra sleep. Other than that, getting out early from school is simply better. So, let me ask you this: Should late starts be replaced with early dismissals?
