An Unforgettable Season

The 2024 Archbishop Moeller Crusaders football team had an unforgettable season, finishing with an impressive 14-2 record and claiming the GCL South Championship. While the Crusaders came up just short in the state championship game, losing to Olentangy Liberty 28-14, their journey was one filled with determination, skill, and excitement. The team’s performance throughout the season set a high bar for future teams, with their dominance in the league and their resilience in the playoffs.

Under the leadership of Coach Bathiany, the Crusaders dominated the regular season, winning all four of their games against top rivals like Princeton and St. Xavier. Their defense was particularly strong, forcing 27 turnovers over the course of the season. The offense, led by Matt Ponatoski, outscored opponents by an average of 41-17 per game. These stats highlight the team’s overall ability to dominate in all phases of the game, making them a force to be reckoned with in the state.

Matt Ponatoski, a junior quarterback, was the star of the season, earning both Ohio Mr. Football and Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year honors. Ponatoski’s leadership and talent on the field were crucial to the Crusaders' success, as he broke multiple school records and displayed remarkable poise in pressure situations. His ability to lead the offense, whether through the air or with his legs, was one of the main reasons Moeller was able to dominate throughout the regular season and make a deep playoff run.

The Crusaders’ playoff performance was a showcase of their grit and determination. In the state semifinals, they delivered a resounding 49-10 victory over Centerville, which set the stage for their showdown with Olentangy Liberty in the championship game. Despite the loss, the Crusaders gave it their all, and their effort proved that they were one of the best teams in the state. The championship game, though disappointing, highlighted the heart and resilience of the Moeller squad.

The 2024 Moeller Crusaders football team had a remarkable season that will be remembered for years to come. Their achievements, including the GCL South Championship and a state runner-up finish, reflect the hard work and dedication of both the players and coaching staff. Although they fell just short of their ultimate goal, the season set a standard of excellence for future Moeller football teams and cemented their legacy as one of the top programs in Ohio.
