Community Service

For my community service class, I go down to Saint Francis de Sales each week and work with the younger students. Every time I go, I’m paired up with one or two kids, and we spend time together out in the hallway. Usually, we play different games that help them learn, stay focused, or just get a break from the classroom. It’s a simple routine, but it has become something I really look forward to because I can see how much it means to the kids to have someone giving them attention and helping them in a fun way.

When we’re out in the hallway, I try to pick games they enjoy the most. Sometimes it’s memory games, sometimes matching games, or even quick educational activities. What I’ve learned is that every kid is different. Some are shy at first, and some will talk nonstop the moment you sit down. Either way, I try to make sure they feel comfortable and supported. Even though it seems small, I’ve realized that these few minutes can really help them refocus when they go back to class.

After we finish playing our games, we go with them to lunch and recess. This part of the visit feels a lot more relaxed, and it gives me a chance to see what the kids are like outside of schoolwork. During lunch, they love to tell stories or ask questions, and hearing what they are most excited for after school. Recess is always the most fun because the kids have so much energy. Sometimes I play with them, and other times I just make sure everyone is getting along and having a good time.

Being part of this community service class has taught me a lot about patience, responsibility, and how much small actions can matter. Even just showing up every week makes a difference. The kids remember you, they look forward to seeing you, and you can tell that having positive role models around really helps them. I didn’t expect to get so much out of it, but I’ve learned more about working with younger students and also more about myself. Overall, going to Saint Francis de Sales has been a great experience and something I’m glad I chose to do.
