Meeting the IT Intern
You know that guy who just sits in the ITC all day helping students with their computers? Yeah, that’s Brandon Randolph, and he’s a lot more complicated than what some people may expect. I sat down with Brandon and asked him all that he does here looking for some information on what a day in the life of a Moeller IT intern looks like.
Brandon’s life is much more complex than we think. He not only plays a big role for all the students at Moeller, but he is constantly working to be able to do what he loves in the future.
Brandon grew up in Wadsworth, Ohio nearly three and a half hours from Cincinnati. He now goes to the University of Cincinnati. At first, he chose UC due to the strong engineering co-op program, but soon discovered that math was not his strong suit. This is when Brandon took a turn on his major and made the transition into Information Technology saying, “I’ve been very happy with IT”.
Brandon explained to me that the co-op search at UC can be brutal with many students not getting the jobs they had hoped for. However, for Brandon, it all worked out. He said, “One day I’m sitting at home thinking holy crap I don’t know if I’m going to get a co-op, then I get this email from UC saying Moeller is holding open interviews and I thought that sounded pretty cool.” Brandon couldn’t be happier with the opportunity he is receiving here. Moeller, as well as the co-op program, is setting him up to be successful in his career as he said, “just getting in here getting my hands on an IT department, a real IT department, even doing the help desk stuff is helping me learn a lot and helping me get acclimated to the IT world. But to actually be here in an IT department and getting my hands on computers and stuff is awesome and I’ve loved it.” Brandon plans on doing something with technology later in his life as he told me, “I just love technology and want to do something with IT.” He believes he is heading in the right path due to a great experience he is having at Moeller.
There is more to Brandon then what all the students see behind the help desk every day. Brandon has tons of hobbies that he loves to do in his free time. He told me more about what he does in his spare time by saying, “Video games is a big one, I have an Xbox and a PC and I play various games on both, hanging out with friends on the weekend socializing with my college buddies, and coaching wrestling, that’s one of my biggest hobbies and it takes but a lot of my time too.” As you would expect with all that he loves to do, Brandon is always busy doing something.
Brandon’s schedule is one that is very difficult with few breaks. He starts his day at 7:30 in the ITC at Moeller and spends the day working with students up until around 3:30. You would think this is when Brandon’s day is over, well you thought wrong. He then goes over to the O’Conner center where he helps coach Moeller’s wrestling team from 3:45-5:45. However, right after they’re done, Brandon is the head coach of the club middle school team with future Crusaders hoping to come to Moeller in a few years. “They needed a coach this year, and I was the guy who took the role. I’m very glad as I’ve been having a lot of fun with that.” Brandon is here until about eight o’clock every night until he heads home and starts the process over again the next day.
Though Brandon has only been here a short time he has loved being at Moeller. He came in with no knowledge of what Moeller was, not even knowing it was an all-boys school until his first day. Yet after a few months he said, “Since I’ve been here and since I’ve been acclimated to the culture, love it. Compared to my high school, this place is insane. It’s something I’ve never experienced before.” Brandon plans on finishing up his co-op here at the end of the year, but is so happy he was able to get the opportunity.
I know many people don’t know too much about Brandon, he just fixes your computer and you head back up to class. However, next time you’re in the ITC with him you should strike up a conversation because he is one heck of a guy.
