The Sound of Moeller - Montgomery Tree

From garage starters to concert openers, the Montgomery Tree Band has been showing the Cincinnati area what Men of Moeller can accomplish.

The “Groovy men of Cincy who make music and love big trees” includes: Colin Dunaway ’20, Logan Martin ’20, Brent Patterson ’21, Von Huhn ’22. They are called Montgomery Tree.

Colin Dunaway came from Mr. Balbach’s choir, while Logan Martin, Brent Patterson and Von Huhn all participated in marching band together. You may recall Von Hugh as the vocalist from the half time shows in the Moeller football season of 2019. Von calls marching band the origin point of the formation of their band. He said, “We probably wouldn’t have known each other if we hadn’t been in marching band. However, us coming together as a band was a decision made outside of the Moeller band, and Montgomery Tree is not associated with the Moeller band.”

“We’re a rock band. More specifically, we are pretty versatile as we dabble in hard rock, psychedelic, classic rock, hair metal and soft rock. We have a very classic sound, but we also cover songs from the 60’s all the way to now,” said Huhn.

The name for the band was originally going to be Montgomery Three, but as Colin joined, they decided to change it to better fit their group. They picked Montgomery Tree because as Von puts it, “We thought it sounded cooler.” The band sprung from the city of Montgomery, so they choose to have it as part of their identity.

The wisdom that they have gained being a startup is invaluable. They wanted to share some of that in regards of the difficulty of music and teamwork it takes to be in a student band. Von said, “Stick with it, you’re not going to be perfect, the best thing is seeing your progress as time goes.”

To all the aspiring musicians out there, Colin Dunaway said, “The best thing to do is to do it together with a friend, it will be a lot more fun.”

Montgomery Tree has a large audience. This band has opened for big events and names such as The Catalina Wine Mixer, The Naked Karate Girls, Night for the Fight, and the Lebanon Chamber. They play their “rock party” style there. You can find them playing songs such as Jumping Jack Flash, White Room, Basket Case, My Generation and much more.

Each member points their influence to the bands such as The Beatles, The Who, Guns N’ Roses, Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Lep Zepplin, Green Day and all the bands in between. Their diverse love has sprouted to their extensive arsenal of performance songs. They have even written a few songs of their own such as Your Company, Paper Factory, Newton Station and Cross the Line.

The band hopes to continue playing for as long as they can. They understand that the market for a band like theirs is niche and competitive. But they do not do this for the profit, they do it for the love and appreciation of music.

The Montgomery Tree members hinted at a possible album of their own within the next year.

You can find them online on Instagram with @montomgerytree.band. They plan to use the winter to perform some indoor gigs, so be on the lookout!
