Volleyball Finishes 21-22 Season State Champs, Second Year Running

By Jack Dollard

The volleyball team finished its season with a bang beating the 27-1 Elder Panthers in four sets. In back-to-back years, the Crusaders beat the Panthers in the state championship. The Crusaders finished the season at a record of 23-6. This victory gave them their tenth state championship since the start of the program in 1995.

“At the start of the season, no one expected us to do what we did,” said both players and coaches. At the conclusion of last year, the team lost six of seven starters and graduated 11 seniors. The team had some big shoes to fill if they wanted to go back to the state championship. Through hard work and dedication, players found their roles, and the team started to see success after lineup changes. The state championship run was long and stressful, going to five sets in three of four games before heading to the championship. No one on the team was sure if they would win, but they weren’t going to give up. If Eder was going to win, the Crusaders were going to make them earn it. That mentality is what allowed Moeller to upset the favorites to win the championship.

This year the team only graduated two starters and five seniors total. The team has two big holes to fill but is confident there will be players who step up to fill them, which is the reason Moeller volleyball has been so successful over the years. The stage is set for the 2023 volleyball team to be the first team to three-peat in program history.
