Midseason Check-in: Moeller Wrestling
Moeller wrestling is just a little over halfway through their season and is currently third in the GCL.
This season, Moeller Wrestling is short on upperclassmen with only one senior on the roster. Last season, Seniors Brad Hornback and Kurt Thompson led the Crusaders and passed the torch down to Joe Anastasia.
Even with the lack of upper-classmen, Anastasia is optimistic about this season, the talent the underclassmen bring, and how the team shapes up against the competition. Anastasia said, “the underclassmen are really stepping up into their role; without many upperclassmen leading the way, they are holding their own.”
Although they are a young team, the Crusaders are still placing in tournaments. They placed fourth in the Catholic Invite against some of the best teams in Cincinnati. “We did a great job competing in the tournament and showed people what we are really about” said Anastasia.
The Crusaders might be a young team, but they are not undersized. There are many physical and tough wrestlers, so the future looks bright for this program. Moeller lost a nail biter to Mason early in the season by one point. Mason is a top team in the city and Moeller held their own. Moeller was heavily outnumbered in the upperclassmen department in their match against Mason.
Anastasia said the team was aware of what they needed to work, commenting that “We need to get off our stomachs, back points are killing us right now”. It is not that the Crusaders are underperforming but that they are losing duals and not placing high enough for recognition.
The Crusaders look to finish the season strong as they must beat LaSalle and Lebanon to advance to state duals. All of the experience underclassmen are gaining this season also promises a positive outlook for the future is Moeller’s rookie program.
Moeller looks to finish the season strong and compete for a GCL title and eventually, a state team or individual title.
