Crusaders on a Mission: Moeller Football’s Road to State
The 2025 season kicked off with high expectations for Moeller football. After reaching the state championship in 2024, the Crusaders entered this year ranked No. 1 in Ohio in the preseason polls. Despite losing some key players from last year’s roster, local media and fans across the state predicted Moeller would once again be a top contender for a deep playoff run.
Currently, Moeller holds a strong 4–1 record, with victories over Princeton, Trinity, Christ Presbyterian Academy, and rival St. Xavier. Their only loss came in a nail-biting 43–42 game against Chicago Mt. Carmel. In their recent matchup against St. Xavier, the Crusaders secured a decisive 30–18 win. Quarterback Matt Ponatoski threw for 136 yards, Tyler Joselyn rushed for 93 yards, and Reggie Watson added 93 receiving yards. The team is averaging over 37 points per game, with Ponatoski already surpassing 1,000 passing yards. Joselyn and Watson continue to lead the offense, while Conner Cuozzo and Christian Harris anchor the defense.
Injuries have posed challenges, with key players like Landen Adams, Carson Khayo, Grant Emery, and Connor Maupin sidelined. However, these setbacks have opened the door for younger athletes to step up and make their mark.
Looking ahead, the road to the playoffs remains tough. Upcoming games against formidable opponents like Elder, St. Ignatius, and St. Edward will be crucial for playoff seeding and momentum. If Moeller maintains its current form and continues to improve, the team is well-positioned for another postseason run. Current rankings place them among the top teams in Ohio, and many believe this could be the year they bring home the state title.
Confidence within the team is high. Key players Cooper McCutchan and Sam Hamilton have expressed excitement about the remaining schedule, especially the high-stakes matchups against Elder and St. Edward. McCutchan noted that this year’s squad has a “different kind of grit” that sets them apart from last season. That grit has already been on display, with Moeller coming from behind to win three games after trailing 14–0—clear evidence of their resilience.
As the season progresses, each game will test the Crusaders’ toughness and potential. With strong leadership, depth, and determination, Moeller is on a mission—and they just might finish it with a state championship.
