By Carter Yox

Moeller Volleyball Captains Brody Threm, Ben Hagerty, Jack Dollard are currently working hard to lead this ecstatic team to a three-peat for the state title.

Moeller Volleyball State Champs, 2022.

With a record of 23-6 last year, the boys have been training during the offseason to make sure they can try to be even better than last year’s team. Colin Yox has been part of this program since freshman year, and this will be his second time playing Varsity. The Crusader caught up with him to ask a couple questions about the team.

Crusader: Going into this year, what are your goals as a team?

Yox: Our coaches have been saying since day one: our goal is to improve each day, learn from mistakes, and no matter the losses, we have still try to find a way to learn and get better.

Crusader: What are the biggest games of the year?

Yox: Any GCL game, 2 against La Salle, 2 against X, 2 against Elder. Then post-season games are also big-time games for us.

With the season underway, the team is red hot leading off 5-0, beating three teams in the Mount Vernon Round Robin. After that, they travelled to Walnut Hills to beat them at home, and finally overtook the Falcons on their home court.

But now they have a battle ahead of them. They play their first GCL match against St. X at X. This is a big game for them knowing X is s solid team that will be putting up a great fight for the GCL Title. Home games that everyone should try to make are April 14th against St. X, April 21th against Elder, and April 25th against the Lancers.

Best of luck goes out to the Moeller Volleyball team—we will be rooting for them to chase another ring this year. Hopefully we can get some good crowds at the big games to support our brothers and help them chase that ring.

A Look Back at Moeller Volleyball's Climb to the Top.

By Drew Reinhold

With volleyball season on the horizon, Moeller is coming into the season with a full head of steam coming off back-to-back state championships. Led this year by seniors Will Patterson, Jack Dollard, Brody Them, Sebastian Rahe, and Keegan Todd, the team is looking to three-peat the state championship.

This Moeller reign of back-to-back state championships started with Coach Lee Meyer, who joined the program in 2019. His philosophy and team building activities mixed in with vigorous practices created a close-knit team that could win championships.

Due to covid in 2020, the team did not get to finish Lee’s first season as coach but picked back up in 2021. The team headed into playoffs as underdogs, led by seniors JJ Beckelheimer, Matthew Reinhold, Jack Carroll, Patrick Riehle, Nick Yeoman, Nate Weihe, and Alex Davy. This veteran team persevered, all the way to the state championship where they won over Elder, leading to Lee’s first state championship at Moeller. After this, the coaching duo of Lee and his Dad had the full support of the Moeller family behind them. They knew after this win that it wouldn’t be the only one.

In 2022, they came into the season with a little bit of ring rust dropping games early and falling in the rankings as the season went on. As the season started to wrap up, they went on a good run which led to an upper middle of the pack ranking, but they were not favored to win it all again. They grinded through every game with almost every series going down to five games, which led to the state championship, where they claimed their back-to-back title beating Elder once again. This signified them as a dynasty of oho volleyball and a dominant program for more years to come.
