Mario Kart Tour was released on September 25, 2019. It was first introduced by Nintendo in January of 2019 to be sold on iOS and Android devices. Before the game was released, it was heavily advertised and highly anticipated, causing it to reach the top of iOS in downloads before the game was even released.
In just 12 hours after its release, there were over 10 million users playing the game. After one week, the mobile game made $12.7 million in player spending and had over 90 million downloads. These numbers shattered mobile gaming records by Nintendo. Even though the game did so well, many people had mixed reviews.
The game play was desirable because of what many players loved about the original Super Mario Kart that dates back to 1992. The game wasn’t based on a 1st place finish, the mobile game is based off a point system.
Players in the Mario Kart community complained about the graphics of the game, but most of its users are pleased by how it stayed true to the original games. Mario Kart Tour includes four different difficulties; 50cc (leisurely), 100cc (fast), 150cc (very fast), and 200cc (extremely fast).
Underwater racing and gliding are also in the game featured in previous Mario Kart games. You see these features in many of the different cups as you level up by gaining stars. You gain starts and levels by gaining points in the race by accomplishing objectives in the race. You must get a certain number of stars to get the next cups. Many users complained about how the racing was more automated than previous Mario Kart games, meaning that the gameplay is a little more controlled by not being able to control the speed of the kart due to the kart being at a constant speed.

The new features in Mario Kart Tour were created to resemble the new features of today’s games. Mario Kart Tour has created “tours” in the game that are named after cities in the world. New characters, karts, and gliders come out in each new tour. A tour consists of two weeks and has 16 new cups that are put into the game with each tour.
Players in the community were excited about being able to play against friends and other online players but that is not yet available. Not being able to play with others is the most negative review about the game. The game is also getting negative reviews by not having Luigi and other main characters into the game until a later date. This is also contrasted with Mario Kart Tour having new and different characters and karts as well as superpowers different by each character.
The average reviews on IGN.com is a 6.7/10 and on Destructoid.com is a 4.5/10.Which is very low for a Mario Kart game. Mario Kart Tour players do have mixed reviews about the game, but many are more positive than negative. You should give the game a try if you haven’t and is still a highly played game on IOS and Android.
