Free Guy: Don't Have a Good Day, Have a Great Day

Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer in Free Guy

Prior to watching the film Free Guy, I knew little to none about it. I hadn't even heard of it until Mr. J threw it up on the board. The only knowledge I had going into it had something to do with video games.

Free Guy is a film unlike any I have seen. It incorporates action as well as comedy for a perfect mix of entertainment. It is a great film for every person with a love of action, video games, and Ryan Reynolds. Along with fantastic graphics and sound FX. The AI as well as costumes and setting were phenomenal and accomplished what was necessary.

Free Guy is able to keep an action-comedy perspective while including connections between people and in game “characters”. Ryan Reynolds did what Ryan Reynolds does and kept a funny role that was hard not to enjoy. The majority of the characters are likeable and well played. Ryan Reynolds role as an “NPC” is a very unique type of role but it is very well thought out and executed to perfection.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this film and is one of the better movies I have seen from that genre type. Guy (Ryan Reynolds) plays the main role in the movie. He starts as bank teller who has a “set” role within the video game, waking up and doing the same thing every day. He realizes that his “set” role doesn’t have to be his life. He decides that he wants to be more than just the bank teller that gets robbed everyday and accepts it. His role develops into much more than a bank teller as he works to level up for a girl who met who told him he must reach level 100 to talk to her. Most players within the game use violence to level up but Guy decides that he is different. Throughout the movie he is a help to many other within the game.

The director did a great job including people that are within the gaming/influencer community such as ninja, jacksepticeye, Pokimane, DanTdm, Lazarbeam and others. This was a cool addition and something I think helped reach the intended audience. For a similar film I would side I enjoyed Free Guy over Ready Player One.
