Christmas Movie Review: Home Alone 1 & 2

By Ryan Mechley

Christmas movies are one of the better parts of the Christmas season. While there are all sorts of Christmas movies that you can watch, the Home Alone franchise has been a crowd favorite since its inception at the start of the 90s.

The two Burglars (Harry and Marv) behind the young in New York City

The Home Alone movies are two of the top-rated movies of all time. The movies are about a young boy named Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) who lives in a large house with his even larger family. In the first film, Kevin is left at home on accident while his whole family leaves for a Christmas trip to Paris. They don’t even realize they forgot about Kevin until they are in the middle of their transatlantic flight. Kevin, then, is left to fend for himself, as well as defend his family’s home from two ornery burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern).

In the second film, the family loses Kevin again, this time in the airport. Kevin ends up in New York City after following the wrong person onto the wrong plane. He uses his dads credit card to get a hotel room and eventually runs into the same pair of burglars from the first film. As one might imagine, Kevin once again finds himself needing to outsmart the robbers.

I talked to a couple of my classmates about the movies, and they shared some of their opinions. Mitch Mcnulty told me that the Home Alone movies have “always been a movie that is easy to watch with anyone” and that he could watch them “1000 times and still want to watch it again.” Aidan Sargent said that it was the “very first” Christmas movie that he saw, and it still is “my favorite.” He said that the movie just has “a little bit of everything” in it—action, drama, and comedy. Karson Hobbs had a similar take as McNulty and Sargent, saying he loved the fact that it was so funny. He said that he “still laughs and every time” that he watches it.

The Home Alone films have become a favorite holiday tradition for many families. Don’t skip over these classics next time you see them pop up during Christmas break!
