The Surprising Resemblance of Don’t Look Up and The American Government
After accidently watching Don’t Look Up three times, I would say I have a pretty good understanding of this movie. I watched once with my mom, then a few days later my girlfriend made me watch it, and then we watched it again as a family when my brother got home for winter break.
Don’t Look Up was released December 5th, 2021, and is directed by Adam McKay, who is known for his other movies such as, Anchorman, Anchorman 2, Step Brothers, and Vice. Don’t Look Up has a very strong cast it’s self which in my opinion would attract a lot of people.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are the main characters. Other notable actors in this movie would be, Chris Evans, Ariana Grande, Maryl Streep, Kid Cudi, and Jonah Hill.
With only 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, there have been mixed reviews. Fellow classmate, Alec Fletcher, describes the film as the “adult Lorax”. The first time I watched this movie I enjoyed it. After the second and third time as any other movie it got very repetitive.
The president (Streep) is portraying an extremely conservative-minded president. She does a good job of this especially when it comes downplaying the severity of science given to her that an asteroid is going to destroy Earth. The scientists (DiCaprio and Lawrence) portray their characters well, they discover their findings of the asteroid, present it to the president, and when she doesn’t listen, they go elsewhere like the media to spread the word.
There is a big problem that arises that an asteroid has a direct path with earth and basically everyone is going to die if they don’t do anything. The president kind of just says it’s not a big deal then tries to find a way to get money from it. It only made $790,000 but had over 360 million viewing hours on Netflix.
This movie is really making fun of our political world today and how a lot of people just try to disprove science. Kind of like the reality of certain situations in our world today like global warming. Right now, this isn’t a very big issue everyone is paying attention to but in a few months when all the forests fires start up again everyone will freak out and act like they didn’t expect this to happen like any other year. (Which is basically what this movie is about. This movie has a funny take on how political figures like the president disprove science that is right in front of them. They also turn the potentially catastrophic event into a way to gain value from it. On top of all of that it shows how billion-dollar companies help influence the governemnt and what goes on in the world today.
The movie in my opinion was funny and it made me laugh quite a few times the first time I watched it. Aside from the strong cast and the comedy aspect they were kind of just beating the dead horse. Don’t get me wrong, the movie was easy to follow and interesting. But it was kind of just stating the obvious, everyone already knows the government is just making everything about money or how they try to disprove science, like climate change. This movie does a very nice job at getting the point across with how narrow minded some people in the political world can be with certain topics like climate change. But I would say it kind of aimed towards trying to make the audience laugh rather then trying to show the significance of this situation going on with climate change. It was just very funny to see Adam McKay poke at our political system and the reality of how it is today.
