Art Student Spotlight: AJ Rumely

Moeller has a wonderful art program that develops and nurtures natural talent, resulting in confident artists who can create beautiful and intricate drawings, paintings, and sculptures.

Although students only have to take one year of art to graduate, many students choose to go through all four years of the art program. Many students who dedicate four years to the study of art also choose to pursue an artistic major in college, transitioning their artistic skill into a prosperous career.

To get a better understanding of the art program, The Crusader interviewed AJ Rumley, a senior currently taking AP Art 4 and AP Art History.

Crusader: What is special about the art program?

Rumely: The class environment makes it so special. Everyone has their own unique way of making art, and the classes accommodate every individual no matter what type of art they enjoy.

Crusader: What is your favorite topic to draw about?

Senior Art Student AJ Rumely.

Rumely: I love to paint music. I focus on heavy emotions in my work, and music is a thing that evokes emotion in almost anyone no matter what you like to listen to. When I draw music, I imagine what the music is trying to tell me and put that down on paper in art form.

Crusader: What is your favorite piece of art you have created?

Rumely: This is an album cover I drew with pointillism, a technique where you don’t use lines but instead place thousands of dots together. It is not my most creative piece but is my most technically impressive one.

Crusader: Who is your favorite artist?

Rumely: Although he does not do visual art, my favorite artist of all time is Kanye West. His creative process is one of my biggest inspirations and how he navigates his ideas is something I try to model.

Crusader: What do you like to do outside of art?

Rumely: Outside of art, I like to do improv, volleyball, and also help with house leadership here at Moeller.

Crusader: What are your future college plans?

Rumely: My plan is to attend UC’s DAAP program and major in Visual Communication Design. This deals with taking big ideas and condensing them into an easy to navigate visual, which is one thing I enjoy about art.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with The Crusader, AJ! Good luck with your future plans!
