Why We Need More Pep Rallies at Moeller

By Colin Young

How many pep rallies have you been to at Moeller? As a senior, I think I have gone to maybe two.

Pep rallies are one of the best ways to build up school spirit, show support for the sports teams, and end the day with a fun experience. With COVID happening in 2020, there were restrictions placed so pep rallies couldn’t happen. Now that these restrictions are gone, Moeller needs to bring them back. While they may take a lot of planning and coordination, students could help with everything to make the pep rallies go off without a hitch. There could be a new student leadership team put together to plan and organize the pep rallies.

The brotherhood is one of the biggest and best parts about Moeller. Spending time with your Moeller brothers cheering for all the sports teams is another fantastic way to include everyone and to build the brotherhood. At the two pep rallies I attended, every single student was active and participated. It was a great environment where all the Moeller community was together hyping up the football team. Why not have a pep rally for the other sports?

There should be at least one pep rally for each sport or sports season throughout the year. While we may have award ceremonies for each sport, the pep rally would help show off the entire school’s support, and build up the team before a major event, rather than the award ceremonies simply serving as a recap and congratulations.

MoeGate is the only pep rally I have been too. This is considered a fall sports pep rally; however, football is the main focus while the other sports are merely mentioned. A great solution would be to have a pep rally for each season and every sport should be highlighted that happens in that season. This approach would allow for four pep rallies a year.

One question that might be asked regarding more pep rallies is “when.” When would we be able to have these pep rallies? There are already multiple days during the year where the schedule is altered, and I believe that 90-95% of students wouldn’t mind giving up an early release day if it meant having a pep rally. This would make it so that no class time would have to be missed or taken away to have the event.

The student leadership team could work with the administration to find a date, and then the team would make it happen. To ensure that students would prefer the pep rally over an early release day, a survey could be sent out at the beginning of the school year to be voted on. Another potential way to schedule a pep rally would be simply taking 10 minutes off each class on A days, which would give 40 minutes. Add in A-day mentor group, and we could have 50 minutes for a pep rally, which is plenty of time.

More pep rallies will bring the community together even closer, and it would be something that boosts everyone’s experience at Moeller.
