Brent Suter: Humanitarian
Former Moeller standout Brent Suter was recently nominated and selected as a finalist for two humanitarian-based awards: the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award and the 2024 Philanthropist of the Year. This is Suter’s fourth year being nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award, having been nominated in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024. However, this is his first year being nominated for Philanthropist of the Year, and he has been named a top-three finalist. Being nominated for these awards is a testament to a player’s character and gives fans a better understanding of who the players are off the field.
The MLB Philanthropist of the Year is awarded to the player who best demonstrates a positive social impact and altruistic spirit beyond the game. The winner receives a $25,000 grant for the charity or cause of their choice, while the two runners-up each receive a $5,000 grant. Suter was nominated for this award on October 21st and was named one of the finalists, along with Rhys Hoskins and Jose Trevino, on October 25th. The winner will be announced in December during the MLB winter meetings.
The Roberto Clemente Award is given to the player who best represents the game of baseball on and off the field through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions. Each year, every MLB club nominates a player for the award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character. This year’s nominees include players whose community and philanthropic activities have focused on important issues such as cancer and other illnesses, education for young people, natural disaster relief, and more. Suter was nominated on September 9th and was selected as a finalist on September 14th. He ultimately fell short of the award, losing to Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez.
It’s no surprise to see Suter as a finalist for these 2 prestigious awards. He’s always been someone who puts others above himself and does whatever he can to help those who need it. Through his continued work with organizations such as RARE, La Soupe, Joe Nuxhall Miracle League, and fellow Man of Moeller Sam Hubbard’s foundation, Suter has made a lasting mark not only on Cincinnati, but on the world. The time he’s spent with these organizations has had massive impacts not only on the people the organizations help, but on the organizations themselves. Humanitarian acts like these really show who Suter is as a person and exemplify the Marianist beliefs that he values. Whether he wins or not, being nominated for these 2 awards shows Suter’s commitment to helping others and making the world a better place.
