Honoring a Legacy: Gerry Faust

When the name Gerry Faust is mentioned at Archbishop Moeller High School, it brings feelings of admiration, remembrance and profound faith. Faust, a legendary figure in high school sports, went beyond his role as a football coach to become a historic figure in history, creating a legacy that continues to inspire students, alumni, and the larger Moeller community.

Gerry Faust arrived at Moeller High School in 1962, shortly after the school was founded in 1960. Tasked with building the football program from the ground up, Faust quickly had shown a gift for motivating young athletes and fostering excellence both on and off the field. Faust turned Moeller football into a dominant force, winning numerous national titles and five Ohio state Championships in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979, and 1980. Faust led the Crusaders to an incredible 174-17-2 record with a 90 percent win rate during his incredible 18 year reign. This degree of achievement made Moeller a huge name in high school football, not only in Ohio but all around the country. Faust’s teams were known for their discipline, preparation, and a relentless commitment to teamwork. His attention to detail and ability to inspire players to perform at their highest level became defining characteristics of Moeller’s program.

Faust’s influence extended far beyond the football field. He had shown every football player the importance of faith, academics, and personal growth, aligning closely with Moeller’s mission as a Catholic Marianist School. Players were encouraged to excel not only as athletes but as students and leaders in their communities. Faust’s coaching philosophy was rooted in the belief that football was a tool for teaching life lessons. He shaped young men who went on to become successful professionals, community leaders, and devoted family members. His impact on the lives of his players was profound, with many attributing their personal and professional success to the lessons learned under his guidance.

Even after leaving Moeller in 1980 to become the head coach at the University of Notre Dame, Faust maintained a strong connection to the school. His contributions are celebrated through numerous achievements, including his induction into the Moeller Athletic Hall of Fame and his statue up by the practice fields. Gerry Faust passed on November 11, 2024, at age 89 leaving behind an enduring legacy as one of the greatest high school football coaches in history. His passing marked the end of an era. Many remembered him not only for his coaching achievements but also for his unwavering faith, kindness, and passion for helping young people succeed. The impact of his life was evident in the stories shared by those he influenced, each telling stories about how Faust’s guidance shaped their paths long after their days on the football field.
