Cohen Fugate

I was born in Fairfield, and I’ve lived in the same house in Monroe for my entire life. I went to St. Susanna school in Mason from preschool all the way throughout 8th grade. I played basketball and baseball in middle school and played football in 3rd and 4th grade. Basketball was always my favorite sport growing up and I would always play against the kids that live in my neighborhood. Going to the park and playing basketball, then walking to the gas station after for a drink was always my favorite thing to do growing up no matter how hot or cold it was outside. Another few core memories I had before my time at Moeller was going to the park on July 4th where there would be dozens of food trucks and the entire community would always be there. At the end of the night, they would have a grand finale of fireworks that was always one of my favorite things about summer. I think going to a private school, while having friends that went to a public school was always interesting because I got to see how different life was for both kids in my school and kids in my neighborhood.

There have been a countless number of things that I have done here at Moeller during my time. Starting my sophomore year, I was a basketball student coach for JV and then for varsity last year and this year. This was always my favorite thing to look forward to because basketball has always been my favorite sport and my favorite thing to do. Another thing that I have done here during my time was Little Buddies. Little Buddies have helped me in my life because I realized that not everyone has been afforded the gifts that I have been given in my life. Ever since I started Little Buddies, I have been so grateful for all the gifts that I have been gifted in my life. Another impactful thing I have done here at Moeller is Kairos. At first, I didn’t want to go to Kairos because I thought it was pointless, but after it helped changed my perspective. The impact Kairos had on my faith was huge and even to this day I have been more emersed in my faith than I ever was.

My favorite moment here at Moeller so far was last week when we beat St. X at home in basketball. Last year, we played St. X twice and got destroyed both at Moeller and at St. X and it was heartbreaking to see how the seniors felt. Leading up to the game all the players were hyped and wanted revenge for what happened last year. Seeing the change from how locked in we were this year compared to last year, I knew we had a good chance to beat them. As soon as we were walking out of the locker room, you couldn’t hear a thing because of how loud the game was. During the game, it was so hard to hear even the person next to your talk, and seeing all the players hyped up was a different feeling. After we beat them, we sang the alma mater with the student section and saw the school spirit was next level. In the locker room after the game, the energy was insane and with it being my senior year and beating X was a different type of feeling.

After Moeller, I plan to go to Miami University and study psychology, while being a team manager for their basketball team. When I first visited Miami, I knew that this was the place for me and I even met up with their coaches and other team managers. I stayed in connection with their coaches and team managers and got tickets to their first game of the season. After that game, I knew that this is what I wanted to be doing for the next four years. I plan to be a team manager for four years at Miami, and then eventually became a graduate assistant then a assistant coach.
