The Genesis of Moeller Capstone

This school year marks the first in Moeller history where a graduating class of seniors will have distinguished graduates with the title of Global Scholar. Thanks to the newest course at Moeller, the Capstone.

Capstone is a class where students at Moeller who are global scholars have a massive project to do all throughout the year. This allows the scholars to apply themselves and think of solutions for modern day problems. Some of the projects don't even have to solve a modern-day problem, they can be educational in a creative way.

Mr. Josh Wellen, the teacher of this course, talked about the process that the students go through. "After choosing their idea, they document all their steps of the project to actually solve whatever issue they are dealing with. Through that process they have internal and external mentors to help them if they struggle." Like he said they are trying to allow the kids to figure it out themselves, but they have mentors just in case.

There are numerous creative projects and ideas throughout capstone. A senior named Garret Poetker is creating a new way for children and teens to learn. Garret is taking the game Minecraft and changing the in-game materials to elements from the periodic table. He is doing this through a long process of coding and has put a huge amount of work into it. "My capstone project is about education learning environments through simulation games. I found a way to make my Capstone project fun, which cancels out most of the repetitive work."
