Annual Canned Food Drive Comes to a Close
The canned food drive has been in full swing for all mentor groups at Moeller over the past two weeks. This year, each mentor group has been asked to bring in more goods than years prior, allowing for a bigger yield in the total number of boxes we donate. In years past, Mr. Wellen and his mentor group have had the most boxes, but this year, there seems to be more competition within the mentor groups to surpass Mr. Wellen’s team. Some groups, such as my own, are trying to get well over seventy boxes in an attempt to take down the reigning champs, however unlikely.
Mr. Wellen’s group is striving for eighty-five boxes, whereas most others are in the forty to fifty range. Eighty-five boxes consisting of various goods like soap, toilet paper, canned goods, and deodorant, will surely be plenty in and of itself, but with the combined average of forty to fifty per mentor groups, with roughly forty mentor groups total, we could see around eighteen hundred boxes total. Mrs. Frider, a mentor group teacher in Trinity house, said, “This year, we as a school are all striving to do better than the next group, hopefully increasing our total box count, helping more people than years before.”
At the end of the food drive, students will help in transporting the boxes to St. George and St. Vincent De Paul, both of which aid in supporting the hungry and those in need. Typically, Moeller’s donations are enough to last the nonprofits until April or May. Senior Dom Schutte said, “It’s a great program to help out the local communities around us, and hopefully these people will be able to have meals for the months ahead.”
FINAL UPDATE: With the conclusion of the food drive Thursday morning, Mr. Wellen’s group came in with roughly ninety boxes, more than any other group. Quiroga House had more boxes than any other house, earning them points in the house cup. Their total percentage of student participation is what determined their success, as with more students contributing, they were able to make more boxes. In any event, all of the efforts of the canned food drive will help those in need around us.
