Moeller Academic Team

While most students are still getting ready in the morning or going to school, the academic team is already practicing for their next match at 7:15 in the morning. The academic team is made up of some of the smartest students from each grade level and they are separated into JV and varsity. The academic team competes against other GCL schools just like any other sport.

The students compete in trivia-style matches. The sections that the matches are based on are economics, history, English, math, biology, and many more. While it may not be as popular as football or basketball, the fierce competition is still there. For example, in 2023 the academic team finished 5-4 on the JV team and 7-1 on the varsity team, which is better than some of the other sports teams. The team did not just do this by luck but by practicing 1-2 times per week at 7:15 in the morning. These students’ knowledge does not just come from practice alone but the rigorous classes they take. The academic team also has team dinners after their games.

Even though there is already an academic team that only some of the smartest students are on, there is still another way to compete in a similar manner even if you are not on the team. Even if students somehow miss the emails Mr. Corder sends there is still a house academic team that happens within Moeller where students compete against the other houses. They compete against each other in a trivia style matchup which is similar to the academic team. This is an amazing thing to get students involved who want to challenge themselves and others in a friendly competition among fellow classmates.

The academic team, however, is not just to compete to see who is smarter, but it is also a great opportunity to build the brotherhood at Moeller. It is great to make new friends with people who have very similar interests and an opportunity to challenge each other to grow and learn. One student on the Moeller academic team, Kyle Borgemenke, said, “Academic team has allowed me to learn so much about my classmates that I would have never had an opportunity to know. From their knowledge of biology to their personal character. I have been so amazed along this 4 year journey”. This student explains how the academic team is a perfect experience to grow intellectually but it is more than that. He also explains that it is a fantastic way to grow socially with their peers at Moeller and grow in the brotherhood. With Kyle Borgenmente and other bright minded students, the academic team has a promising future.
