Moeller Bowling Enters Post Season

As the Moeller Bowling team’s regular season comes to an end, the OHSAA bowling playoffs approach. With full heart and one-hundred and ten percent dedication, three seniors prepare to bowl their final frames. Nick Widmeyer, Max Malof, and Campbell Langer, along with head coach Dave Beiersdorfer, intend to lead their team and strongly finish the season on a good note.

The Moeller Bowling seniors roll in to the end of the season with the utmost pride. One senior, Nick Widmeyer, was highly spoken of as coach Dave Beiersdorfer stated, “Nick is having one of the best seasons I’ve seen since he has been bowling for us…given he did not start bowling for us until his sophomore year.” Nick is an excellent bowler and he pours his heart out for the team. On top of his skill and dedication to the Moeller Bowling team, Nick’s knowledge of the game show’s in and out of the alley. As Coach Beiersdorfer also said, “Nick is one of those guys I can put in to bowl a frame and have full faith in him and leave zero doubt in my mind. He knows how to get it done and knows the game well.” Earlier this past winter, the Moeller Ice Hockey team held a bowling night with the bowling team. I asked Owen Lundy, class of 2019 and the goalie of the Moeller Ice Hockey Team, how his experience was bowling with the team and his response was one to be heard. “I felt like I was bowling with the big dogs!” he said. We continued our conversation and he elaborated on what the event really brought to their minds. Community and one love. Owen said, “It was great to see two teams that besides being a winter sport, do not cross paths often. The guys on the bowling team were great. Nick was one of the guys who was able to explain the game and teach us technique and all of the rules we had no clue were a part of the game. You can definitely tell bowling is more than just a sport to these guys, like hockey is to me; it’s their passion and their life.”

Another senior, Campbell Langer, yet again exhibits what it means to be a member of the Moeller Bowling team. Campbell resides on the Junior Varsity Navy team where he is a mentor for the younger teammates and works profusely to improve his skill and knowledge of the game. He is a hard worker and believes in his team, as the team believes in him. Campbell shows his pride for the team and holds his head high, as he can often be seen around school wearing his Moeller Bowling apparel. Like the others, it is agreed that bowling at Moeller is about more than just playing a sport. After talking to Campbell, overall he emphasized that “Joining the Moeller bowling team was one of the best decisions I have ever made.” Campbell approaches the end of the season with a great attitude and especially with a ‘don’t slow down until you’ve crossed the line’ mentality.

The third member of the trifecta is senior Max Malof. Max brings an interesting twist to the sport. Max transferred to Moeller from the rival school, St. Xavier after his sophomore year. Not only does he bowl, but Max is a rugby stud! As a very outgoing student, Max’s personality is not a shy one. During my interview with coach Beiersdorfer, he said “Max is different. A good different however. He brings an edge to the game that nobody else does.”

Bowling matches are very somber and aren’t in anyway similar to a rugby or football game. It was then I realized that Max livens the game of bowling and brings a physical and mean mentality to the sport. Coach Beiersdorfer then said, “It’s nice to have a guy like that. Most of the guys are of the shy type but then it only takes one guy like Max to tear every one of his teammates from their shells and solidify their bond as teammates.

After indulging myself in the Moeller Bowling society, I wouldn’t hesitate to agree with the seniors and coach Beiersdorfer that bowling is more than what it seems. It is a community and the teammates are as close on this team as they are on any other sport’s team. To the Moeller Bowling team, good luck with the remainder of your season and to your off season prep work for the 2019-2020 season!
