Moeller basketball is well known nationally, as they are ranked 8th in the country and number 1 in Ohio. Moeller basketball has proven themselves every year as they are back to back state championships, and many could say it would have been the third year in a row if the coronavirus had not stopped their run short. The Crusaders were 26-1 in their last season and they are known for playing the toughest schedule possible. Head coach, Carl Kremer plans to fight corona and lead the team to another state title this 2020-2021 season.

Dave Campbell, freshman assistant coach said, “The team plans on practicing and playing to the best of their ability this season, and that will be what helps them win this year.” He also mentioned, “We have other goals this year as well, we want to have more than one leader on the team and we are looking for older kids to be a model for the younger players to help them in following years.”

Coach Campbell spoke about how great of men the players are and Moeller is lucky to have them lead the basketball program. Every player is responsible for something on the team, and they all know their role and how to contribute which leads them to be the very strong team they are. Obviously they all cannot start, which leads to guys being backups and having to prepare for certain situations. .

This year is going to be one for the books. Moeller basketball has already had plenty of guys commit to play at the next level, and guys with college offers.

The big impact players this year includes Logan Duncomb, senior center who is committed to Indiana, Alex Williams senior guard/ forward who is committed to Furman, senior guard Aidan Noyes, who is committed to Richmond, senior point guard Aidan Turner, who is committed to Charleston, and junior Evan Mahaffey, who has scholarship offers that include the University of Cincinnati, Xavier, Kansas State West Virginia and Miami University.

Senior Aidan Noyes spoke about the impact that the team had losing seniors and how the rising seniors would have to step up and become leaders for the team. “The seniors last year were great, they really played great ball and were great kids who helped develop every single player on this team. Personally I feel like we have all become leaders this year, not having a state title last year dug a whole inside us, and we all want it for the school and for ourselves. The seniors last year that left a big holes in in the starting lineup included graduating seniors Michael Currin and Max Land, in addition to the departure of rising senior Will McCracken. They were all talented and helped tremendously in getting us to state. I just really wish they could have played that final game and got the title for their final ride.”

Senior Aidan Turner spoke about how the season is going to go this year and he had a lot to talk about. “I do believe that the team has it in them to go undefeated and win state this year, we have been practicing since the day we couldn’t play our state championship game. We have been playing together for this being the 4th year, we have bonded very well with the coaches helping that happen as well, and especially losing Michael Currin we all want it more than anything.”

Aidan went into depth on the passing of Michael Currin and how it truly impacts the players, coaches, and the season. Aidan said, “Michael was such a close brother to every single player on the team and a friend to all the coaches. Michael was a great kid with an excellent work ethic and definitely left the biggest shoes to fill being one of the best seniors. We all miss him very much and are all willing to put in our best work and try as hard as possible for him this year and bring home the trophy.”

The road to state will be particularly rocky this year, with the tremendous weight of grief upon the team’s shoulders. First the opportunity to play for a championship was taken from them, and then a teammate they consider a brother. We hope the best for our Moeller Crusaders this season and wish them the best of luck on their road to state and bringing back that title.
