Leveled up! The 22-23 Esports Team Wins State Championship
The Moeller esports team brought home one of three Moeller state championships at the end of the 22-23 school year. One of this year’s team captains, Paul Shaffer ‘26 talked with The Crusader about how the team came out on top.
The tournament was a two-day event with the first day being round robin play. Day two began with tournament matches, all of which were played at the University of Akron. In total, the Crusaders played three round robin matches followed by three rounds of tournament play.
The Esports team made their way confidently through the tournament. Shaffer said, “We were by far the best team there. The finals were kind of stressful, but looking back, it really wasn’t close.”
The team was certainly not new to working with each other, Shaffer added. “The thing that separated us from the other teams was just how close we were. Most of the team I had known since I was in 5th and 6th grade, so it felt so good to finally win something big”. The importance of the comradery within the team was essential to this victory, according to Shaffer.
When Shaffer got the chance to share his thoughts and feelings on the win he said, “That feeling when I hit the last blow of the tournament…we all just screamed. One of the best moments of my life!”
Looking ahead, Shaffer shared that “losing two of our best players to graduation is definitely going to hurt, but we have many players that are ready and willing to practice even harder than last year.” The team is young, but the dedication of the players is something that takes away any doubt after losing some key players.
This is the likely roster for the upcoming year; however, it is subject to change.
1. Jacob Hershiser (’25)
2. Paul Shaffer (’26)
3. Roman Robles (’26)
4. Eric Obioha (’26)
5. Evan Bibler (26)
Best of luck to the E-Sports team in the 23-24 season!
