Moeller Soccer Recap
The Moeller soccer team had an outstanding season, finishing with an impressive 18-0-4 record. They faced one of their toughest schedules yet, playing against multiple highly ranked teams. Although their season ended in a heartbreaking loss to St. Charles in penalty kicks, this Moeller squad made a memorable run and is now celebrated as the second-best team in the school’s history.
The Moeller boys had an incredible season, filled with key victories and titles. They defeated Henry Clay, the Kentucky state champions, and New Albany, the Division 2 Ohio state champions. They dominated the GCL, finishing 6-0-1, and claimed the city, sectional, district, and regional titles. Unfortunately, they fell just short of the state title. Senior Paxton Hafner was happy with their accomplishments, saying, “I’m proud of our season and wish we could have capped it with a state championship.” Paxton is confident, though, that next year’s team will bring Moeller its first-ever state title. He had hoped for a championship matchup against St. Ignatius and thought Moeller could have won it all.
Even the most outstanding seasons can end in loss, as Moeller experienced. Despite their dominant performance, St. Charles proved to be their biggest challenge. The two teams shared a similar high-pressure playstyle—pressing constantly and attacking quickly on the counter. The game was intense and went back and forth until penalties finally determined the outcome. Karson, a Moeller player, reflected on the game, saying, “If we’d beaten St. Charles, I believe we could have won state.” He admitted St. Charles was the team he feared most in the tournament, recalling their close match in the regular season. St. Charles had overwhelming support from their school, including student buses and teachers allowing extensions on assignments, adding to the atmosphere of the game and making it more challenging for Moeller. Hopefully, Moeller can match their atmosphere next year.
Overall, the Moeller soccer team had a great season, going undefeated in regular play and advancing to the Final Four. With much of the starting lineup set to return next year, there’s strong hope that they’ll capture the state title Moeller has been chasing. They have their eyes on breaking St. Ignatius’s six straight titles in a row, and next year could be their moment. A thank you to all the seniors for their dedication and for leading the team through such an unforgettable season.
