2024 Moeller FB Recap
The 2024 season for Moeller football was filled with growth, intensity, and significant moments. At the beginning of the year, Moeller —one of the top programs in Ohio —entered the seasons with high expectations, due to their strong coaching staff, talented athletes, and success in recent years. Although the season didn’t end with a state championship, it was still a historic season for Moeller.
Moeller was coming off a loss in the state semifinals for the third consecutive year, this time against Springfield in overtime. The Crusaders were determined to bounce back and finally get over the hump. The season would begin with a big-time rivalry matchup between Princeton and Moeller. The famous “King of the Block” game would be the Crusaders first test.
Before the season started, Princeton was ranked as the best team in Cincinnati. Many also predicted that they would beat Moeller due to their strong defense. However, Moeller disproved this theory by defeating Princeton 38-21. This victory sparked Moeller’s run through the rest of their schedule.
Moeller finished the regular season with a record of 9-1, defeating Princeton, Dwenger, East Central, St. Xavier, Lasalle, Elder, St. Ignatius, St. Edward, and Muskegon. Moeller won in style, with multiple blowouts. The Crusaders’ offense was lights out, scoring 35+ in each game except for the one they lost to Mallard Creek. The defense also posted multiple low-scoring games and shut outs, including a 44-0 win over St. Ignatius and a 38-0 over Lasalle.
Not much changed in the playoffs. Moeller won their region, proving that they were the best team in Cincinnati for the fourth consecutive year. In that run, Moeller defeated Sycamore 63-0, Lakota East 55-28, Princeton 28-0, and St. Xavier 28-23. During this stretch, they beat their two biggest rivals, Princeton, and St. Xavier. Tragically, During the playoffs, Moeller’s legendary coach, Gerry Faust, passed away, adding even more motivation to continue winning in his honor.
Moeller Advanced to the state semifinals, for the fourth consecutive year. Moeller would play against Centerville. Moeller finally got over the hump, beating Centerville easily, 49-10. Moeller would play in their first state championship game since 2013, when they won back-to-back. Moeller would end up losing this game 28-14. Although they lost the big game, Moeller made history by having a back-to-back Mr. Ohio winner.
