Moeller’s New Jiujitsu Club is Gaining Popularity
People hear a lot about the "Men of Moeller" brotherhood in the hallways and at football games, but they don't truly experience it until they are completely out of breath on the wrestling room mats.
As a brand-new club this year, Jiu-Jitsu is gaining popularity early on. Everyone is sweating in the wrestling room, and no one is messing around. Brotherhood hits a little different when someone is scrambling out of a submission and finally gets up to a dap-up from a classmate.
Some students have never done any martial arts before, so they are a little nervous starting up. But Coach Lynch, who started the club after a successful Jiu-Jitsu MoeTerm, is super chill and understands that everyone has different levels of experience. His partner, Jeremy Pender, is a professional black belt who makes it easy to learn the basic moves while also keeping the workouts challenging. They make sure everyone has a chance to learn and improve.
A lot of guys are up in the air about a sport like this. Noah Mitchel 27’ recently joined and mentioned, “It’s not a thing most people would try or be interested in, but Mr. Lynch makes the club extremely enjoyable.”
Tuesdays and Fridays are starting to become some students' favorite days of the week because of this club. Tyler Begley 27’ summed it up perfectly when he said, “I look forward to Tuesday and Friday because I get to learn self-defense with my guys.”
For many students, the favorite part is the live sparring at the end. Being thrown into matches with guys they have never talked to before makes them friends very fast, especially if someone loses. No one goes easy on anyone, but as soon as the round is over, everyone is laughing, giving each other high-fives, and getting ready for the next round.
That is what makes Moeller’s new Jiu-Jitsu club more than just another activity. It is another place where the Men of Moeller can compete, challenge themselves, and build friendships while learning something new.
