Josh Safdie and Timothee Chalamet’s Marty Supreme premiered on Christmas Day 2025. The film follows the egocentric pursuit of table-tennis player, Marty Mauser, as he attempts to become the best player in the world. Ambitious yet flawed, Marty hustles the likes of celebrities and business owners to a world championship bid to Tokyo. After Tokyo Marty craved success—hustling New York again with over-the-top confidence to once again reign supreme in the world. Only his view of being a champion would forever change.
I had the chance to watch this on opening day. Before watching the movie, the marketing technique of Chalamet was on point. An infamous Marty Supreme jacket has been seen on the backs of pop culture figures, such as Frank Ocean, Megan Markle, Kylie Jenner, and others. Chalamet, already an esteemed actor from his roles in the Dune Trilogy, seemed to market the movie entirely by himself. It only enticed me further—just 2 hours after seeing the trailer while doomscrolling, I had my opening day tickets booked. And I did not regret a single thing. The movie proved to be different than it was in the trailer. It’s not a movie about ping pong. It’s a movie about taking chance, taking risk, and having stupid confidence in a dream.
The movie itself was immediately placed in my “personal” top 10 list. I definitely don’t aspire to be the quality of person that Marty is, I aspire to have his confidence. To see him do anything possible to achieve his goal, at absurd lengths. Time seemed to move slower for Mauser. If there was something ludicrous that could be accomplished, he could do it. 24 hours in a day seemed like an eternity for him. On top of the risk-taking, confidence-inducing, scenes in the movie, it’s soundtrack is arguably just as good. Although strange for a movie set in the 1950’s to only contain 1980’s synth music, it just fit. And to close the film with “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, a song have on vinyl, it just meant more. Marty Supreme will reign supreme among the 2026 list of top movies. It is a must watch.
