This is Rocket League

Rocket league is a video game released in 205 by Psyonix as a high-speed blend of soccer and rocket-powered cars. The game quickly gained popularity due to its simple concept, skill-based mechanics, and viral appeal, especially after launching as a free PlayStation Plus title. Its competitive scene grew rapidly, leading to major esports tournaments and a dedicated global fanbase. In 2019, Epic Games acquired Psyonix, and Rocket League later went free-to-play in 2020, cementing its place as one of the most enduring and accessible competitive games of its era.

This game is one of my favorite games I’ve ever played. Every time I get on, I am immediately intrigues by the contrast of the game’s simplicity to the skill gap between players. In the, there are eight ranks, ranging from Bronze I to Supersonic Legend. The difference of gameplay between these ranks is astonishing, and it is extremely difficult to become even decent at the game, having to put in hundreds to thousands of hours. This makes the game have a progression side to it, which is what gets the players hooked. The thrill of learning new mechanics or scoring your best goal is unmatched, and that’s the reason why most players choose to play Rocket League instead of other games.

One of the main problems this game has, though, is the fact that it takes so long to get decent at the game. This is one of the main factors that drives people away and scares them from consistently playing. The counter to that, though, is that Rocket League has an amazing community with its own inside rules and support for new players and opponents (although there is toxicity). The strength of this community can be shown by something called a “Rule One”. In game, if your car gets stuck to another car, you or your opponent cannot move until someone scores a goal. The majority of players follow this rule, and it exemplifies the community’s love for the game. I started playing Rocket League right before the pandemic hit and this game is what mostly kept me entertained during those long months, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is still one of the greatest games of all time.
