Moeller Art Student Spotlight: James Flege
Moeller High School has a wonderful art program with teachers who help students discover and develop their talent. This initial talent is refined into skill over an art student’s years of study. Every student’s journey in the program is different; some take just one year, while other dedicated and gifted students take art all four years. This further exposes students to potential careers in art.
The Crusader talked with Senior James Flege to learn a little more about his experience in the art program. Currently, James is in his fourth year of the program and taking AP Art 4.
Crusader: What art classes have you taken at Moeller so far?
Flege: I’ve taken Art 1, Art 2, AP Art 3, and AP Art 4, which shows how much I’ve enjoyed art at Moeller over the course of my four years here.
Crusader: Why do you enjoy creating art?
Flege: I enjoy creating art because I can allow myself to get out feelings without needing to speak.
Crusader: What do you enjoy about the art program at Moeller?
Flege: I enjoy creating and learning about different kinds of art, which I get to make with a variety of tools and using different methods. There is also always a great environment in which we have a lot of freedom to experiment with different types of art.
Crusader: Who’s an art teacher you’ve enjoyed having at Moeller?
Flege: I’ve had Mrs. Sommer all four years in my classes, and I’ve enjoyed having her because of the trust she places in us to try anything we want to try. This is nice because I get to create the kind of art I enjoy and express myself the best.
Crusader: What do you enjoy doing outside of the art classroom?
Flege: I enjoy spending time with family, playing sports like football, building and trying new things, working on cars, and lifting at Moeller. I also run cross country and track and have a lot of time invested in both of those.
Crusader: Are you thinking about furthering your art career in college? What are future college plans?
Flege: I’m not going to be doing art in college, but my experience with art will help me moving on in my future major and career. In college, I want to get an engineering degree, which would have an aspect of design and need for problem solving and creativity.
Thank you, James, for sharing your experience with The Crusader! Good luck with your future aspirations in college!
