Field Trip to NKU
By Jesse Mercalde
The Personal Finance class recently took a trip to Northern Kentucky University to participate in an activity that might be considered a class, a game, a competition, but in the end, is best described as an excellent learning opportunity.
This field trip provides a chance for students to learn about investing in the real world. Students arrive and must first pick a table to sit at—choose wisely, because the people at your table become your team for the rest of the day. The most recent session was led by two instructors, Stewart and Sharon, who walk students through the activities and games as the day progresses. They got the groups started by walking everyone through the investing process.
Once students have a grasp on how investing works, teams compete through various investing games. These games can get very competitive, as students are playing for a prize at the end! The last game involves every team’s credit money to win REAL money each round. At this points, teams can get very competitive with real prizes on the line!
Students also get to experience the NKU commons and food court with a $10 voucher. This is a great opportunity to get a feel for the collge campus and spend some time previewing what college life will be like.
