Academic Team Ends Season Strong!
The Moeller Academic Team finished strong, boasting a Varsity 5-4 record for the season. With many strong members returning next year, the future looks bright for the Moeller Academic Team!
Led and coached by AP World History teacher, Mr. Batista, the Academic Team dedicates lots of time and effort to preparing for the weekly events. With two practices a week, along with time spent outside of school in preparation for the different topics each student competes in, the grind certainly doesn’t seem to stop.
Junior Academic Team member Kyler Lunsford said of his first year, “I learned that I’m a competitive student at academic events, which is something I wouldn’t have expected going into this year.” Although the JV team lacked experience, Lunsford and Owen Brennan helmed the team, ultimately coming up one match short of an undefeated season. “It was a lot of fun and was a great experience that I’d recommend every Moeller student check out,” urged Lunsford.
For some, the Academic Team may seem out of reach given the possibly daunting task of performing well academically, although that is not the case. “It’s almost like Jeopardy. The format of the matches doesn’t necessarily put a ton of pressure on the competitor,” says Senior Captain Ethan Clark. With questions about Tom Brady’s Super Bowl wins and even Eminem songs, you don’t have to be a genius to enjoy your time on the team. Although the program might not be as intensive as Speech and Debate, it is still an excellent way for Moeller students to stay current on history, science, math, geography, language, pop culture, and more.
If you know an Academic team member, be sure to congratulate him on the completion of a great season!
