The Culture of Little Buddies

Little Buddies has always been a favorite activity for students at Moeller and even at Coryville Catholic. Even though students must come early on a late start day, they still love to go and be with the kids for those few minutes. The Moeller students even gain service hours for being a part of this program. As you read through the article, the Crusaders interview a student that is currently in the program about his experiences, along with the person who started this program, Brother Ron.

Little Buddies is a program here at Moeller where only selected people get to participate from an application. However, seniors and juniors are only allowed to apply to this program. The Moeller Students are paired up with the same student from Coryville Catholic twice a month for the rest of the year. They do many events like making pumpkins, Christmas on Campus, going to the zoo, and activities in the classroom. These activities make the kids feel seen and welcome from different environment in downtown Cincinnati. It started in 1995 where Moeller was trying to find a way to get involved with an interstate community and different backgrounds. Coryville Catholic is mainly an African American school, but this allows Moeller students to show leadership along with becoming a role model for these kids to shape their future.

The Crusader interviewed Tommy Scahill, who is in the program for his 2nd year and passionate about helping kids. Tommy wanted to be in this program because he wanted to see if he was passionate to continue to work with kids, especially wanting to major in education for college. By being involved with not only little buddies but with becoming a camp counselor for Camp Joy, really allowed him to get connected with these kids and help them live their life as if Tommy was in the thier shoes. Seeing these kids come from different backgrounds around Cincinnati, Tommy realized that he needed to not take things for granted with the blessings he has that gave him the opportunity to be where he is now. He quotes, “this allows me to think about the little things in a big picture when participating in Little Buddies.” Tommy loves to spend time with the kids with these events and seeing that these kids enjoy themselves.

Little Buddies is one of the programs that Moeller provides to help our students build the brotherhood in our local community. By being with these kids and our students showing them what it means to build that community, can really influence or impact their lives from the variety of different backgrounds they come from. Little Buddies is a way to show leadership by becoming a role model for these students to look towards.
