Teacher Profile: Ms. Tlucek

Ms. Karen Tlucek is one of the new hires at Moeller High School for the 22-23 academic year, and she is using her class to bring the finance world to life.  Teaching classes such as personal finance and marketing, Ms. Tlucek is bringing her skills from the business world to Moeller classrooms to help young entrepreneurs learn how to control their investments and practice real business. We asked Ms. Tlucek some questions to see how her Moeller experience is going so far and so our readers can get to know her a little better.

Q: So tell us a little bit about where you are from and where you grew up?

A: I grew up in Glen Rock, NJ, a small town about forty minutes outside New York City.

Q: Where did you go to school?

A: I completed my undergraduate mathematics degree at Boston College, then continued my graduate work in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at Boston College.  When I decided to pursue a second career in teaching, I enrolled in the Master in Secondary Education program at Xavier University.

Q: So how did you get into teaching?

A: I've spent most of my career in the corporate world in Marketing/Brand Management and Finance at Gillette, Procter & Gamble, and Kao.  I found my greatest joy in teaching and coaching the new and young members of my team and setting them on a path to learn, grow, and shine.  I realized this was my purpose, passion and God's plan for me as I shifted to a full-time teaching career.  My dad was always on the sideline cheering me on as I pursued this dream.  When I lost my dad in 2020, teaching also became a way for me to make my dad proud and honor him.  He would have wanted to know every detail about my school days and would have been equally as proud of my students as I am.

Q: What do you enjoy about Moeller the most?

A: I always love the opportunities to see my students outside the classroom, living the Moeller values and pursuing their passions.  It was inspiring to join students who were thinking beyond themselves and giving back at the Ronald McDonald House and Matthew 25 Ministries.  And it's always a thrill to see so much talent at sporting events combined with so much Moeller spirit in the crowds!

Q: Any interesting fact you want the Moeller Crusader readers to know about you?

A: I keep a running list in the back of one of my notebooks where I jot down many of the funny and heartwarming moments I have with students throughout the day.  I'm grateful that the list continues to grow as students make me laugh and feel welcome in my first year at Moeller.  If I'm ever feeling stressed or overwhelmed, I read through the list, and it immediately resets me back to a joyful mood and reminds me how blessed I am.

The Crusader had a wonderful time speaking with Ms. Tlucek and can’t wait to see what she has in store for the Moeller Family. On behalf of The Crusader, thank you, Ms. Tlucek, for everything you do. We can’t wait to see you continue your journey here at Moeller.
