Sam Hubbard for Six!!

“Sam Hubbard, who grew up a Bengals fan, won a state championship at Moeller High School, a championship at Ohio State, makes the massive play to take it the other way and give the Bengals the lead” announced the Bengals’ commentator during the playoff game on January 15th.

Moeller alumni, Walter Payton Man of the Year winner, and Bengal Captain Sam Hubbard scored the game-sealing touchdown for the Cincinnati Bengals against the Baltimore Ravens to begin their Super Bowl campaign. Hubbard is a massive 6’5, 265-pound defensive end, but he has not always been this size or played this position.

In his senior year of high school, he weighed forty pounds less and played safety. Believe it or not, football was not even his main sport! Hubbard played midfield in lacrosse and was committed to the University of Notre Dame for lacrosse before he decommitted to pursue football at Ohio State.

Even though his build, position, college, and even sport switched in his transition from high school to college, the one thing that has remained constant through his career is his character.

Sam Hubbard Class of ‘14

Moeller teacher and Founder’s Day award winner Derrick Williams taught Hubbard in English class. Mr. Williams said Sam was always on top of things. Even though he was a good-looking kid, star athlete, and honors student, he never acted cooler than anyone else. He respected and got along with everyone, even if their interests differed.

Outside of football, Hubbard has always been eager to help others any way he can. At Moeller, he participated in many service opportunities and retreats including Corryville's Little Buddies and Kairos.

Hubbard continued his service as he created his foundation. The Sam Hubbard Foundation helps the people of Cincinnati by providing vulnerable children and families with educational, medical, and athletic resources. In fact, after his touchdown, his foundation released a new donation opportunity called the Hubbard yard dash. They are celebrating this huge touchdown by matching ten thousand dollars’ worth of donations to Cincinnati area schools. Since this historic touchdown, his foundation has raised over sixty-thousand dollars!

Hubbard also loves giving back to his high school alma mater. He runs a football camp every summer for kids in grade school at Moeller. He teaches them the fundamentals of football and donates all earnings to his charity. Sam Hubbard is a great football player and an even better person that, Moeller is proud to call an alumni.
