What is a “Man of Moeller”?
We hear the term used throughout Moeller High School quite frequently. If we were to see a student partaking in a community service experience, we could say that that student is an example of a Man of Moeller. When we see a student stepping up in his community and being a leader, we say that he is doing what a Man of Moeller should do. We can give many examples of what a Man of Moeller should do, but what characteristics should a Man of Moeller have? Besides all the community service trips and leadership roles, what is a Man of Moeller, and what does it mean to be a Man of Moeller to the students?
The Crusader had the chance to talk to some students to get their take on what it means to be a “Man of Moeller.” Owen Boggess ‘24 is a house captain of Zaragoza and a part of the Cavalry, the group of guys who lead the student section at athletic events. Boggess said, “A Man of Moeller is someone who helps everyone in the school building as well as in the community. Build the family. Hold the door. Earn the shield. Live your life to the fullest… Being in mentor group and playing Madden or whatever else you do in mentor group, hanging out with all the freshman, sophomores, juniors, as well as my senior friends here, going to all the football games and seeing the family we have with all the alumni and student section…it’s a big thing here at Moeller, and it means a lot.”
David Hagen ‘24 also had some insight on the topic. Hagen is a school captain and serves as a great role model for all students at Moeller. “I think a Man of Moeller is someone who lives up to the core values of our school. Build the family, hold the door, and earn the shield every day. Try to include everybody and build the brotherhood. Specifically, make every day coming into Moeller, mentor group especially, a time to get everybody involved and really make the freshmen get into the brotherhood.”
Both students had great insight on what a Man of Moeller is in their own words, but they both said one thing in common: Build the family. Hold the door. Earn the shield. These are the core values of Moeller and a blueprint of what every student and faculty member at Moeller should be striving to achieve.
