Moeller 2023 Parking Lot Update
With the new 2023-2024 school year beginning at Moeller High School, many changes have taken place since the past school year. Currently, one widely talked about change is the limitation on parking spots.
Mr. Beitman—our head of security at Moeller—reported that we’ve gone from 370 spaces last year to 319 spaces this year, meaning we’ve lost 51 spots in total. Unfortunately, this caused it to be more difficult to find a place to park at Moeller and obtain a parking pass. Not only has the reduced space affected students, but also fifteen faculty/ staff members have been displaced from the Moeller parking lot. Furthermore, due to the loss of spaces, parking passes had to be sold to a select amount of people, causing more people to share parking passes or carpool.
On the other hand, some positives have come from the recent changes such as reduced traffic at the beginning and end of the day. Many students remember in past years how difficult it was and how long it took to leave school at the end of the day. In addition, thanks to the generosity of All Saints, we’ve gained five extra spots for Moeller students to park in.
After talking and getting information from Mr. Beitman, The Crusader talked with some students to find out their view on parking this year.
Moeller Senior Owen Brennan, captain of the Zaragoza House, has a parking pass but has been helping out in light of the shortage by carpooling several people to school each morning. Other than this, he’s said that the parking limitations haven’t affected him very badly.
James Flege, Moeller Cross Country Team Member, shares a pass with another senior, Colin Evans. These are two seniors that applied for a tag to share, increasing their chances of being able to park at Moeller. While they were fortunate enough to get their tag, Flege expressed his concern for those that can’t park at Moeller. He further explained how it’s more of a challenge to get to school on time for these students, putting them more at risk for tardy slips.
Henry Busemeyer of the football team has his own tag and is parking in the All Saints lot. Busemeyer did great in the Moe Raffle last year and was able to obtain his guaranteed parking pass for senior year through that incentive. Thanks to his efforts in the raffle, he’s had no problems this year with parking.
In conclusion, the parking lot changes at Moeller seem to have impacted everyone differently, but students are still able to deal with the changes that have come to them.
