New House Dean Profile: Karen Tlucek

Eveslage House has a new dean this year: Karen Tlucek. Ms. Tlucek started teaching at Moeller last year and just made the transition to house dean for the 23-24 year.

Ms. Tlucek graduated from Boston College with a mathematics major, then continued in the Master of Business Administration program. She had a career in finance at Proctor and Gamble before she realized her true passion was teaching. She taught at Xavier for a bit before coming to Moeller to teach math and finance classes. Next year, Ms. Tlucek is excited to begin teaching two new business classes in the innovation hub, one of which will be an investment and research portfolio class where students will play the role of Wall Street managers and invest in stocks.

Mrs. Tlucek has loved her first months as a house dean, with every day being action packed as she looks to create a feeling of brotherhood, leadership, and academic and spiritual growth. She has loved all the new people she has met like senior leaders, freshman, parents, and mentor teachers. Her goal is to carry on the legacy of Mrs. Schaffer, who did a great deal for the house.

Ms. Tlucek wants to unite the mentor groups more, so students can bond with other students throughout the house. This would be done by having different activities like kickball on the backfield or dodgeball in the gym. According to Ms. Tlucek, β€œThe best part about the switch from a classroom teacher to a house dean has been the opportunity to go beyond teaching Algebra concepts to focusing on the whole person.”

Ms. Tlucek said that being a house dean allows her more opportunities to connect with students and guide them on the path to becoming remarkable men. Her main goal is to turn students into leaders by having more student run activities. One example of this was when a student took the initiative to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless last year. He got other students to help him with this and rally behind the cause. Ms. Tlucek hopes this is the spirit that will continue to develop within Eveslage House.
