Helping with the Hurricane

On the evening of September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm, made landfall in the Big Bend region of the Florida Gulf Coast. The southern Appalachians got hit hard by Helene, with hundreds of casualties and billions of dollars in property damage due to widespread flooding. In a broad area spanning from the Gulf Coast to the mountains of North Carolina, strong wind gusts destroyed trees and power lines and caused property damage. Wind gusts peaked in the 45 to 60 mph range during the morning hours of September 27

Hurricane Helene was an awful event which caused millions to be left without homes, electricity, and necessities. As a Marianist High School, we are called to help others when they are in need and that’s what Moeller did. One of our teachers, Mrs. Boggess, came up with the idea of collecting money for Hurricane Helene. Mr. Shafer and Mrs. Boggess contacted the United Way of North Carolina to donate money that would provide food, shelter, or any other necessity that people may need. The money also went to business owners who lost their business to the hurricane.

Mrs. Boggess recognized the urgent need for support and proposed collaborating with Elder to organize a fundraiser at the homecoming game. This idea sparked a collective effort between our two schools, uniting students, staff, and community members in a common cause. With the great efforts of Mrs. Boggess, Mr. Shafer, and all the others who helped we were able to raise 6,500 dollars. This money will go directly to providing essential resources like food, water, and financial assistance for those affected, including help for struggling business owners trying to recover from the storm's impact.
