John Boehner was born on November 17, 1949. He attended Moeller High School, graduating in 1968, and played football under the famous coach Gerry Faust. After high school, he attended Xavier University and then started his own small business. Shortly after that, he entered politics after seeing firsthand how high taxes and red tape impact entrepreneurs. He represented Ohio’s 8th congressional district from 1991 until his resignation in 2015 and served as the 51st Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015 as a member of the Republican Party.

Students of the AP Government class were fortunate to have him come in and speak to us. Boehner began his speech with a brief introduction, although most of us already knew who he was. He shared his experiences representing Ohio’s 8th congressional district and his time as Speaker of the House. He talked about the art of negotiation, which was very interesting to hear about. Lastly, he shared his experience at Moeller and the lasting impact the school has had on him. Boehner was very relatable and seemed true to himself. Overall, this was an awesome experience for Moeller. Boehner often speaks highly of us, and it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to talk to a Speaker of the House. Thank you, Mr. Boehner!
