Moeller’s New Athletic Director

Moeller announced the appointment of its new athletic director, Jonathan Hayes, on January 24th.

Jonathan Hayes is Moeller’s new athletic director.

Hayes graduated from South Fayette Township High School in 1981 and attended the University of Iowa to play football from 1982-1984. Iowa originally had him play the linebacker position his freshmen year before switching him to tight end during his sophomore year. By junior year, he was one of he best players on the team and was named an All-American.

Hayes declared for the 1985 NFL draft, and in the second round, he was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs. He played for the Chiefs from 1985 to 1993 and later joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he appeared in eight playoff games, three AFC championship games, and Super Bowl XXIX. After an amazing career as a Steeler, Hayes retired in 1996.

After retiring, Hayes decided he wanted to get into coaching and began his second career at Oklahoma University under Bob Stoops, and in 2000, they won the National Championship. In 2003, he was hired by the Cincinnati Bengals as a tight-end coach, where he served the organization until 2018. With the success he had there, he proceeded to become a head coach and general manager for the St. Louis Battle Hawks in the XFL from 2019-2022. In 2023, he decided to be an offensive coordinator for the Dallas Renegades. That year, the Dallas Renegades won the XFL championship. With all these amazing accolades under his belt, Hayes has now decided to serve Moeller High School as athletic director.

The Crusader had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Hayes, who is excited to be a part of bringing continued success to Moeller athletics. Hayes credits timing and his family’s love for Moeller among the reasons he took the job. He noted that “since 2007, there has been a Hayes walking these hallways.” The great experience he has had with Moeller is ultimately what brought him to our campus. For the future of Moeller, Hayes said, “The most important part is the facility and the people we have in those facilities.” He wants to grow this school and continue to bring in people who can help make this place the “shining star” that it already is.

He is excited to take advantage of this opportunity and be part of the family!
