Moeller Basketball Goes 3-0 in Florida

Moeller Basketball took their annual Christmas trip to play in Florida over the holiday break, returning with some big wins!

The team traveled to Sarasota to play in the 32nd Ram Jam Classic. Moeller last played in this tournament in 2018 with a team that would go on to win state later that school year. That team included future NBA player Miles McBride and future NFL player Carrington Valentine.

Before going to Florida, Moeller Basketball already had a strong momentum coming off a six-game winning streak that included taking out St. Vincent-St. Mary, Withrow High School, and Turpin High School.

Moeller played the first game of the tournament against Southeast High School, winning 58-21. They went on to play Newsome High School from Lithia, FL in the semifinal game, racking up another win of 61-37. Moeller’s third game was in the finals against a physical Cardinal Mooney team from Sarasota, FL. The championship game attracted a huge crowd, and Moeller ultimately won 42-26.

Senior Forward Noah George said the last game “felt like a GCL South league game. It had a different feeling from any of the other games in Florida. It meant a lot to both teams to be able to win the championship. They brought a tough crowd to play against.”

During the trip, the team also had the opportunity to visit several Moeller alumni. They got to meet the all-time assist leader in Moeller basketball history, Mike Monserez. They also met Jack Cox ‘88, who rented out a restaurant for the team to have a meal with several other Moeller alum living in the area.

Senior Guard Kyle Havens said, “Talking to alumni and learning about them is super cool. Sharing memories that are similar to me is really cool. Having support from all over means a lot. We know we are always supported by the Moeller Family. It was very nice of them to have us over and give us food. Overall, the support and hospitality given to us was amazing from the alumni.”
