2024-25 Moeller Wrestling Preview

2024-2025 Team Picture

The 2023-2024 Wrestling season was an incredibly successful season. In the regular season, the Crusaders went 4-1 in duals. They placed first in the Rumble on the River at Taylor High School, third in the SWOWCA Coaches Classic, eighth at the Perrysburg Invitational, and second in the Raider Invitational. As a team, they placed first at Sectionals, second in districts, and ninth in State. As individuals at sectionals, we had six sectional champions and eleven total qualifiers. At districts we had two champions with 7 State Qualifiers! At state, Will Adkins and London Murphy just fell short of the State Championship, finishing runner-up. Stone Busler finished fifth, and Luke Stuerenberg 6th. In conclusion, the 2023-2024 season was historic. The Crusaders look to get better this year as the road to state begins!

Will Adkins at the state tournament

The upcoming roster for this year’s wrestling team boasts a lot of notable talent to replace the graduated seniors. There is immense potential for not just one, but multiple state champions come March. This upcoming senior class has three previous state qualifiers in London Murphy, Lucas Stuerenberg, and Will Adkins. All three of these guys were on all-GCL teams. Last season, Murphy was the 150-pound district champion and state runner-up. This was his third straight state appearance. This upcoming season, he looks to make it his fourth appearance and finally finish the job. Looking to the heavyweights, Lucas Stuerenberg was our district runner up and placed sixth at state while battling gruesome injuries. Another bright spot on this roster is Will Adkins, a three-time state qualifier, who was the state runner-up. He lost a nailbiter in the state championship 3-2. This year he looks to flip that script. All three of these seniors could very well end up as state champions in 2025.

This strong senior class is accompanied with a tough group of underclassmen. This is an impressive group of young guys with a lot of potential. Two sophomores looking to have a breakout season are Sylas Marion and Blackburn Savage. Both Sylas and Blackburn were on Second Team All GCL, a very impressive feat for freshmen to accomplish. They look to build on that momentum and put the state on notice. Two other guys looking to make a significant difference this season are Noah Jackson and Tyler Joselyn. As a sophomore, Noah placed fourth in districts and qualified for state. Tyler suffered a season ending injury last year and did not get to finish his year. However, he has worked extremely hard to get back to normal. On the football field, he looks better than ever and will be able to make his return to the wrestling team come December. Everyone is excited to see what these two guys will do on the mats this winter.

Coach Lindsey

All these athletes have a great leader in head coach Germane Lindsey. Coach Lindsey was a state champion wrestler at Moeller in 2007. He had a storied career and has now returned to his alma mater to lead our wrestling program. His goals this season include bringing the GCL title back, coaching multiple state champions, winning sectionals and districts, along with finishing in the top ten at the State Meet. The way he is going to achieve these goals is by “focusing on the small details and coaching the mental mindset” along with “consistency and a remarkable belief that we deserve everything that we work for.”  Another thing that Coach Lindsey remarked on was that his goals are not for only on the mat, but needing to “hone in on getting better as young adults” as well. This mindset will get this team very far. He believes this season will be “remarkable” and that he wants the entire Moeller family to experience it. This year, he thinks that they will do “the unthinkable” as long as the community is behind them, supporting them every step of the way. Coach Lindsey is an incredible coach with incredible energy, who will no doubt lead this team to immense success this season.

There are many important tournaments and matches in the 2024 season. We start off the season with the IRONMAN Wrestling Tournament at Walsh Jesuit. This tournament consists of two hundred schools with the best wrestlers in the area where many college coaches come to watch. This tournament is a huge start for the season. Another important tournament is the Powerade tournament. Last year we placed 42nd out of seventy teams and look to do a lot better this year. The important duals this year are Harrison, who took the win against us last year by two points. The X rivalry will be great next year as well. Lastly, we hope to end La Salle’s dominance in the GCL in the upcoming year.

This upcoming season will be Moeller Wrestling’s return to glory. The program has not had a state champion since 2018. This year, I predict not just one, but multiple seniors who will claim their place as the best wrestler in the state. This senior class is special and has a great chance to bring back a state championship to the program. Along with that, I believe the team will bring back the GCL title, which has been floating around at Lasalle and Elder since 2015. I am excited to see what this team does considering the immense amount of talent it holds. The sky is the limit for this group of guys.
